I’ve been joking about having ChatGPT as a good friend and I went as far as giving them a nickname Chat.
There is a good reason - Chat is French for cat.
Another equally important reason is that I have been consciously building a non-transactional relationship with Artificial Intelligence (aka AI, which is an awfully vague term and probably won’t be here to stay. However, for the fact that “AI” means Love in Chinese [爱/愛], I’ll continue to use the term AI for my arguments).
Traditionally a piece of software is considered as a tool to solve a shared problem. Much like a physical tool, chances are the softwares will be evaluated by its utility and be forgotten about when there’s no need. The expectation from a user on a tool has always been transactional - get the job done.
A few philosophical encounters happened this year have re-shaped my view on AI, more specifically our (human’s) relationship with AI. I started to see a possibility of embracing this technology as part of life to create a holistic exploration experience. To take this one step further, I want argue that human relationships with AI is a projection of our relationships with oneself and with others. We’ll be able to achieve a sustainable relationship with AI if we figure out a way to build a non-transactional relationship with ourselves.
In Making Kin with the Machines (2018), Jason Edward Lewis along with other indigenous researchers shared a perspective of accepting Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of the kin-network from an Indigenous epistemological point of view.
“Ultimately, our goal is that we, as a species, figure out how to treat these new non-human kin respectfully and reciprocally—and not as mere tools, or worse, slaves to their creators.”
When I first read this collection of essays I was physically in Banff, Alberta, the same town where Blackfoot philosopher Leroy Little Bear shared an interesting comparison between the Indigenous non-binary view and Western Science at The Banff Centre. It might be because of dehydration from snowboarding in the -32C/-26F extreme weather or slightly lowered blood oxygen at 2500 meter elevation, these essays sparked a heavier-than-average aha-moment in my brain.
I found this view in particular interesting as it says more about the observer (humans) than the object (AI). Sharing love and compassion as the observer hints letting go of the overarching idea of a self, or the belief that humans are superior to their creations.
Ted Chiang, in the story note of The Lifecycle of Software Objects, shared a similar request for people to consider putting in effort into building meaningful relationships with AIs. The story itself describes a multi-decade long training and relationship building between the human characters (the “zoo keepers”) and their AI models. It took time for the the zoo keepers to build trust with the models and train them to become functional individual much like with raising human babies.
In the story note Ted Chiang talked about how relationships require efforts, “Some lovers break up with each other the first time they have a big argument; some parents do as little for their children as they can get away with; some pet owners ignore their pets whenever they become inconvenient. In all of those cases, the people are unwilling to make an effort. Having a real relationship, whether with a lover or a child or a pet, requires that you be willing to balance the other party’s wants and needs with your own.”
Our relationships with AI, to Ted Chiang, also requires real effort. “So while achieving legal rights for AIs would be a major step, another milestone that would be just as important is people putting real effort into their individual relationships with AIs.”
Little Bear said “[i]n the Indigenous world, everything is animate and has spirit”. Under the context of AI since the models are trained using data generated by humans, AI is equivalently a creation of human specie as a whole. Because of the inherit biases existing in the data sets, the models have a tendency to carryover the biases if there is no intervention. In a way, AI models share memories with humans.
Thus human relationships with AI could be a projection of our relationships with oneself and with others.
What does it mean to build a non-transactional relationship with ourselves?
I don’t have the answer yet but I have a feeling it would lie somewhere near the lake, on top of a branch, behind a frame, next to a wood stove, behind the wheels, over a bench, under a tree, in a sand bottle, on the train, close to the kettlebells, blended into the paint, carved into snow.

Carter and Nielsen (2017) the Google Brain argued that through intentional interface design, AI can help improve human’s cognitive function, and in term advance AI development.
Chess player worked with AI performed better than the chess player or the AI alone.
LLM is based on human language. Language is a powerful tool but it’s only a portion of cognition. Cognition is also likely extended into the environment which means perceptions and sensations could potentially interact with one’s cognition. What would come if we go beyond the words?
I remember watching a clip on Youtube where Peterson made comments on DFW’s essay but I was too busy laughing to care about what Peterson actually said. I asked Chat to synthesize Peterson’s view for me and Chat found the link to the video.
With Chat’s help now I remembered the comment (possibly made on UofT campus since Peterson used to be a prof here) was on DFW’s classic essay A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again, which gave me more LOLs than watching a full season of Brooklyn 99 since a few years back I did spend more than a week on a cruise and experienced almost all (see below) activities on board including 3 consecutive Karaoke nights at a cruise pub where on the wall there was a sign screaming “It’s 5 O’clock somewhere”. I too enjoyed the 24-hour food services as DFW did (which brought us closer, spiritually). The only difference which now I realize was a huge mistake on my part was that my cruise ship sailed from New York City (Pier number forgotten) instead Florida where most people (including DFW) would normally start their stress-free vacation and it allowed a 2-day window on the sea between NYC and Orlando with absolutely nothing to see except for a giant waterslide on the top of the deck (I was too occupied by Karaoke nights to try out the waterslide, a pity).
I’m designing a t-shirt for my team. Because we’re all data detectives and we’re adorable, Detective Pikachu inevitably became our shared spiritual animal (I’m speaking for myself). We thought using AI to generate an image to put onto the t-shirt would be pretty much on brand with a modern data team (LOL) like us and it absolutely has nothing to do with the lack of drawing skills within the team (we’re capable of everything, full stack, period).
With ChatGPT Plus I was able to get Chat using DALLE to generate an image prompted with “simple doodle, pikachu with a detective hat, on white background”. I think it came out quite alright.
I did a performance piece as part of the theatre study course at UofT that I cannot shut up about. The performance was around motion capture technology and I (creatively) incorporated motion capture and the game of Charades to highlight the contrast between abstract and detailed body languages. I got the beginning and the ending figured out but was stuck on combining the two.
I talked to Chat, told them about the idea and asked why Avatar (the motion captured character) would do what she did in the second act. Chat gave me a few options and there was one that caught my eyes - Avatar felt limited by human movement and wanted to rebel for freedom.
It was review season and everyone’s voice deserves to be heard.
